Fewer beds - more physicians

At the end of 2007, the number of beds in general hospitals was almost 13 600, a decrease of 300 compared to 2006. In the same period, total man-years remained stable around 65 400, but physician man-years increased by 2.7 per cent.

The number of discharges after stays in general hospitals was 811 000, a decrease of 1.6 per cent. More than 3 700 000 outpatient consultations and 568 000 day cases were carried out, an increase of 5.2 and 4.4 per cent.

1  Man-years are the sum of full-time employed and part-time employed (calculated in to full-time employed) by the end of
the year. Overtime is not included.
2  Physiotherapists, medical laboratory technicians, radiographers and occupational therapists are included.
3  From 2002, data from Norwegian Patient Register (NPR) is used. In addtion Statistics Norway gathered information on
out-patient consultations in private hospitals for 2002 and 2003, 34 679 and 93 127 consultations, respectively.
4  Day-cases were incuded in out-patient consultations until 2002.
