Manufacturing production remains weak

Production in Norwegian manufacturing declined by 1.3 per cent in the period September -November 2015 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Low production within oil and gas-related industries still explains much of the decline. However, from October to November 2015, the manufacturing output increased by 1.0 per cent.

Three-month change: downturn in oil and gas-related industries

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the manufacturing output declined by 1.3 per cent in the period September-November 2015 compared with the previous three-month period. The downturn is still closely related to low production within oil and gas-related industries, and particularly among the following industries:

• Repair and installation of machinery

• Ships, boats and oil platforms

• Machinery and equipment

Several producers within repair and installation of machinery have seen low production levels in recent months. Compared with the peak in December 2014, the production level within repair and installation of machinery has plummeted considerably. Lower investment activity in the Norwegian oil and gas sector explains much of the decline in these industries, which among other things has reduced the use of contract workers. In addition, basic chemicals also saw a production decline in this period due to planned shutdowns for maintenance work among some leading producers.

On the other hand, paper and paper products were one of few industries to see a production increase in this period. There was also a production increase within the industry grouping food, beverages and tobacco in the same period.

Monthly change: increase from October to November 2015

The manufacturing output saw an increase of 1.0 per cent from October to November 2015, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Industries such as food and food products, rubber, plastic and mineral production as well as non-ferrous metals contributed to the growth. In addition, machinery and equipment also saw an output increase in this period.

On the other hand, repair and installation of machinery had a significant production drop in this period.

Twelve-month change: severe drop in Norway, growth in the euro area in October 2015

From October 2014 to October 2015, production in Norwegian manufacturing saw a severe drop by 8.4 per cent, according to calendar-adjusted figures. Ships, boats and oil platforms together with machinery and equipment contributed the most to the total output downturn. Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU`s statistical office, indicate that production in manufacturing in the euro area increased by 2.2 per cent in the same period.

Three-month change: minor decrease in total industrial production (PII)

The overall production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply decreased by 0.6 per cent in the period September-November 2015 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Extraction of crude petroleum increased by 0.7 per cent, while extraction of natural gas declined by 2.9 per cent in this period. The decrease in natural gas extraction contributes the most to the total fall in the overall production index (PII). For more details about oil and gas extraction for November 2015, see the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Services in oil and gas extraction saw a production decline of 7.8 per cent in the period September-November 2015. Producers within this industry are strongly related to the oil and gas industry, and the production decline should therefore be seen in conjunction with the lower investment activity within this industry.

Production within Norwegian electricity decreased slightly by 0.4 per cent in the period September-November 2015 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. In the same period the production in mining and quarrying decreased by 8.2 per cent.

Figures for support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction are now in StatbakOpen and readClose

From October 2015, figures for Support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction will be published. According to SIC2007, Support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction is grouped in section B Mining and quarrying. Producers within this industry supply, among other things, services related to drilling in exploration, appraisal and production wells, together with other services related to offshore activities, such as installation of floating and fixed structures both above and below the sea floor. The time series is from the year 2010 and forward. This industry has always been a part of the aggregate Extraction and related services, but now its time series is also published separately in Statbank and tables.
