Lower electricity production and less export

The production of electricity decreased by 17 per cent in September, while gross domestic consumption changed little compared to the same month last year. Net exports were 1 685 GWh lower in September this year compared to September last year.

Production, consumption and export surplus of electric energy per month. GWh

The production of electricity amounted to 8 812 GWh in July; 17 per cent lower compared with the same month last year. The reduction can be viewed in conjunction with the reduced reservoir level.

According to NVE, the reservoir level was 67.8 per cent at the end of week 39. This is 19.8 percentage points below the median level for week 30 and 20.8 percentage points below the level in the corresponding week in 2009.

So far this year, 86 TWh has been produced, which is a decline of 8.2 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year.

Increased electricity consumption in power-intensive manufacturing

Electricity consumption in power intensive manufacturing came to 2 398 GWh in September; 11 per cent higher compared with the corresponding month in 2009. The power-intensive manufacturing industry utilises electricity in its production. Hence, temperatures do not influence the electricity consumption in power-intensive manufacturing. Compared with the previous month this year, the electricity consumption in power-intensive manufacturing was 2.1 per cent lower. So far this year the consumption in power-intensive manufacturing amounts to 22 TWh; 8 per cent higher than the same period in 2009.

Electricity consumption excluding power-intensive manufacturing

Electricity consumption excluding power-intensive manufacturing amounted to 5 512 GWh in September; a decrease of 0.5 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year. So far this year the consumption amounts to 62.8 TWh; 6.1 per cent higher compared to the same period in 2009. Households, services and manufacturing other than the power-intensive accounted for the majority of the consumption. Much of this electricity is used for heating.

Net exports of power

Norway’s exports of electricity came to 868 GWh in September, while imports totalled 729 GWh. This gave net exports of 139 GWh. So far this year net imports amount to 6.8 TWh.
