Low production and high imports of power

The production of power in Norway was low through last year. Norway imported a substantial amount of power to cover the deficit in the power balance. Net imports were 7 874 GWh in 2003.

Production, consumption and export surplus of electric energy per month. GWh

The trend was net imports of power through 2003. The imports have not been so large in December since 1996. The imports were 253 GWh and exports were 1 424 GWh. Figures for 2003 state the facts that Norway imported 13 463 GWh and exported 5 589 GWh. In 2002 Norway imported 5 329 GWh and exported 15 002 GWh. The fluctuation in net exports/imports can be connected to variation in the production. Over 99 per cent of power production in Norway is waterpower, which makes the production dependent on water. The quantity of precipitation varies from year to year. The total production of power was 107 267 GWh in 2003, while it was 130 601 GWh in 2002.

Low consumption

Gross consumption was 115 141 GWh in 2003, - a decrease of 4.8 per cent from 2002. The low consumption can be connected to high power prices and higher temperatures than normal. The gross consumption was 11 707 GWh in December 2003, - a decrease of 5.5 per cent compared with December 2002.
