High production - lower consumption

The production of electricity in June 2002 was almost 30 per cent higher than for June last year, and the production has never been higher for June except for June 2000. For the sixth month in a row the consumption of electricity fell compared with last year.

Production, consumption and export surplus of electric energy in June. 1979-2002. GWh

The production of electricity was 9 825 GWh in June. This is 28.9 per cent higher than for the same month last year. There has been more water than normal in the water reservoirs at this time of the year, and the level was in average 70.8 per cent of total water capacity in June. June last year the average was 50.2. For the first six months this year the production was 65 896 GWh, 4 per cent more than for the same period last year.

Lower consumption

The gross domestic consumption was 7 903 GWh, down 2.5 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year. This is the sixth month in a row that consumption has decreased, and for the entire period the consumption fell by 7.2 per cent compared with the same period last year. In this period the temperature has been above normal, also in June. The temperature has a greater impact on the consumption of electricity in the winter months than in the summer months in our northern climate. The prices of electricity are slightly below the prices in this period last year. Lower activity in the industry seems to be the main reason to the fall in the consumption of electricity.

Export surplus

The export was 1 954 GWh in June. This is 1 569 GWh more than for June last year. The import was 31 GWh, and 871 GWh the same month last year. For the first six months the import has decreased with 51.8 per cent to 3 107, while the export has increased with 160.4 per cent to 6 539, compared with the corresponding period last year. This results in an export surplus of 3 432 GWh so far this year.
