3.5 million buildings in Norway

As of January this year, 3 472 427 buildings were registered in Norway. Just 1.4 million are residential buildings.

Among residential buildings, detached houses are the dominant type of building, accounting for 1 102 553 buildings. This makes up 81 per cent of all residential buildings in Norway. Akershus and Rogaland have the most, with 96 370 and 95 842 detached homes, respectively. A total of 22 368 multi-dwelling buildings are registered, of which 9 622 are in Oslo, while Hordaland, Sør-Trøndelag and Akershus have 3 089, 1 424 and 1 339 multi-dwelling buildings, respectively.

A total of 2 119 348 buildings are non-residential buildings, of which 740 048 are classified as commercial buildings. Fishery and agricultural buildings make up the largest main group, with 503 480 buildings. The statistics furthermore show that there are 113 110 manufacturing and warehouse buildings, 39 075 school, cultural activities and research buildings, 36 101 office and business buildings and 26 945 hotel and restaurant buildings.

354 000 cottages and summer houses

Norway had a total of 354 060 cottages and summer houses. Most are in Oppland and Buskerud, with 38 470 and 38 107 cottages and summer houses, respectively. The counties of Hedmark, Telemark, Hordaland, Sør-Trøndelag and Nordland have more than 20 000 cottages and summer houses.

New building type codes

In 2000 Statistics Norway began using a 3-digit building type code in the Ground Property, Building and Address Register (GAB). This means that the number of buildings in each main group are not directly comparable with previous publications.

Unspecified building types

There are now fewer buildings with unspecified building types than previously. At January 2001, 207 unspecified buildings were registered. By comparison, 4 832 buildings were registered that were not classified. One hundred and twenty-five of the buildings without a building type code are in Vestfold. All buildings in Østfold, Oslo, Hedmark, Telemark, Rogaland, Sogn og Fjordane, Troms and Finnmark are classified.
