Emma and Mathias still most popular

For the second year running, Emma occupies the top spot on the list of most popular names for baby girls in Norway. Emma is also the most popular girl's name in Sweden and Denmark. Compared with our two neighbouring countries, Emma entered the list late in Norway but its popularity almost exploded in 2003. In 2004, 2.6 per cent of all baby girls born in Norway were called Emma. Julie, Ida and Thea join Emma in the top four.

Mathias continues to be the most popular boy's name, and the distance down to the next entries, Markus, Martin and Kristian/Christian, increased in 2004. Noah, which was hardly used in Norway before 1994, is a new name on the boys' top-forty list.

More information and tables are available on the Norwegian pages.
