Still high increase in population

The population increased by 15 700 during the second quarter to 4 953 000 settled persons on 1 July. In comparison to the second quarter in previous years, only the second quarter of 2008 had a correspondingly high increase in population.

Excess of births, net migration and increase in population, 2nd quarter 1987-2011

The population increase in the second quarter is about 1 000 higher than the population increase in the second quarter of 2010. This is due to net migration being 1 000 higher than the months April-June in the previous year. Net migration represented two thirds of the population increase, while an excess of births represented the rest. The number of births and deaths remains more or less unchanged, and the excess of births is about the same as the previous year.

With 16 400 immigrations, this was 1 150 more immigrations than April-June in the previous year, and 900 more than April-June 2008, which until then was a record high immigration. The number of emigrations was 6 600; the same level as last year.

Due to the high increase in both the first and second quarters, the total population increase this year is higher than ever, with 32 700 more settled persons during the first half of the year.

Excess of births high in Oslo

A total of 2 700 children were born in Oslo in the second quarter, and with 1 650 more births than deaths Oslo had the highest excess of births of the counties. Furthermore, viewed in comparison with the population, Oslo had the highest excess of births with 2.7 per 1 000 population. After Oslo followed Rogaland with 2.1. The number of births was higher than the number of deaths in all counties except Hedmark.

Other groups of foreign citizens with large net immigration were groups of citizens with Lithuanian, Eritrean and Latvian citizenship; 1 700, 400 and 400 respectively.

The largest net migration from abroad was in Oslo and Akershus, with 1 350 and 1 200 more immigrations respectively than emigrations. Compared to the population, Møre og Romsdal had the largest excess, with 600 more immigrations than emigrations. All counties had an excess of migrations from abroad.

Total net migration surplus from abroad was 23 200, which represented 71 per cent of the total population increase in the first half year.
