Still strong results for banks

2006 was an extremely good year for banks, and preliminary figures show that the strong results continue in 2007. Banks’ net interest income was more than NOK 9.5 billion, and the profits were NOK 5.4 billion in the first quarter of 2007.

Banks. Net interest income, losses and profit and loss. Q4 2001-Q1 2007

Net interest income in the first quarter of 2007 came to a substantial NOK 9.5 billion, the same as in the previous quarter. Net interest income for 2006 as a whole was NOK 36 billion, an increase of more than NOK 3 billion from 2005.

First quarter profit came to 5.4 billion. This is an increase from the first quarter the year before, but a 1.8 billon decrease from the previous quarter. The profit in the first quarter 2007 is the third highest quarterly profit ever for banks in Norway. The extremely good results in the 4th quarter 2006 are partly due to one single bank’s large profit on sales of long term securities (1.1 billion) and also income from shares.

No more net write-back of losses?

The net losses in 1st quarter 2007 were zero, and this is the first quarter Norwegian banks did not have a net write-back of losses in two years. The net write-back of losses in the fourth quarter of 2006 were NOK 0.4 billion and the total in 2006 were NOK 1.4 billion. Net write back of losses has been a substantial contribution to the banks’ profits in these quarters.
