Norwegian banks increase market funding

Norwegian banks’ funding through bonds and the money market has never been at a higher level. Figures for September 2008 show that bond debt increased the most.

Despite the uncertainty and volatile money market interest rates the banks increase their funding through other sources than deposits. The levels of bond debt and inter-bank loans have never been higher than in September 2008. The debt growth (K2) is greater than the growth in deposits, which implies that other sources of funding must increase.

Bond debt and inter-bank loans on the highest level ever

Norwegian banks’ total funding in bond debt is on its highest level ever. From August to September, the total bond debt increased by 5.7 per cent, which is the highest monthly growth since June 2006. The total banks’ bond debt has passed NOK 550 billion. The growth can be a result of increased interest rate which reduces the price of bonds. Another explanation can be that the trouble in the financial markets has made long-term funding more attractive. Banks’ bond debt consists of NOK 306 billions from abroad and NOK 244 billions in Norway. The largest part of the growth is in foreign funding.

From August to September the total interbank loans increased by 2.2 per cent. The growth this year has been 29 per cent. Banks’ total interbank loans reached NOK 733 billions at end-September 2008, which is the highest amount ever recorded. The inter-bank loans now constitute more than 25 per cent of Banks’ total funding. The domestic and foreign interbank loans increased by 2.8 and 2.2 per cent respectively. The interbank loans from abroad constitute the largest share. At end-September 2008 foreign interbank loans amounted to NOK 699 billion, an increase of 14 billion from August.
