Modest increase in issues of bonds

Issues of bonds increased by 16.8 per cent in the 1 quarter 2003 compared with the corresponding period in 2002. Issues of government bonds increased the most by NOK 12 billion, or 300 per cent.

During the first quarter of 2003 the total amount of bond issues in Norway was NOK 41.7 billion, an increase of NOK 6 billion, or 16.8 per cent from the first quarter last year. The Central government issued NOK 16 billion worth of bonds, an increase of 300 per cent compared with the first quarter 2001. The Central government bond issues represent 38.3 per cent of the total amount of issues. Commercial banks issued NOK 3.4 billion. This is a decrease of NOK 4 billion, or 54.1 per cent compared with the same quarter 2002. Savings banks issued NOK 8.6 billion worth of bonds.

Domestic bond debt at the end of the 1 quarter 2003 was NOK 498.7 billion. This is an increase in outstanding debt of NOK 58.6 billion, or 13.3 per cent compared with the 1 quarter 2002. The Central government debt by NOK 139.8 billion represents 28 per cent of the total outstanding debt.

Issues of commercial papers decreased by 6 per cent

Issues of commercial papers decreased by NOK 5.3 billion or 6 per cent compared with the 1 quarter 2002. So far in 2003 the total amount of commercial paper issues in Norway was NOK 83.7 billion. The issues of commercial papers at the same time last year amounted to NOK 89 billion. The Central government issues came to NOK 34 billion, an increase of NOK 16 billion, or 89 per cent compared to the corresponding period 2002. Except from Mortgage companies and Municipalities, the other sectors decreased strongly.

Domestic debt at the end of 1 quarter 2003 was NOK 146.6 billion compared with NOK 131.6 billion in the corresponding period in 2002.

Issues abroad in NOK and foreign currency

Statistics on issues of bonds and commercial papers offered abroad in NOK and foreign currency are obtained from the Bank of Norway. From the first quarter 2001 special ECP and USCP programmes are included. The figures from 2001 and 2002 have been revised.

The statistics show that issues during the 1 quarter 2003 amounted to NOK 90.7 billion. Mortgage companies are the largest borrowers in the foreign market, with NOK 50.5 billion.
