More disabled people employed

The activity rate for disabled persons increased from the second quarter of 2003 to the second quarter of 2004, while it declined slightly for the total population. For the disabled the rate of employment has reached the same level as in the second quarter of 2002.

46.3 per cent of the disabled persons had a job, and 2.4 per cent were unemployed in the second quarter of 2004. Consequently, almost half of the disabled persons were economically active, compared with 78 per cent of the total population aged 16-66. These are the main results from an ad hoc module to the Labour Force Survey.

From the second quarter of 2003 to the second quarter of 2004 the activity rate increased the most for disabled persons below 40 years of age. The increase was of the same size for males and females.

The difference in labour force participation between disabled persons and the total population is smaller among the young ones than among the older. Among those aged 16-24 there is no difference, while among persons aged 25-39 the difference is 26 percentage points, and 34 among those between 40 and 60.

16 per cent of the population aged 16-66 disabled

16 per cent of the population aged 16-66 reported to have a disability, defined as long-term health problems, which may limit the everyday life. This represents an increase in the proportion of disabled persons with 1 percentage point compared with the results from the surveys in the second quarter of 2003 and 2002. Compared to the survey in the fourth quarter of 2000, however, the level is the same. In the second quarter 2004 the disability rate was 18 per cent among females and 14 per cent among males. From the second quarter 2003 to the second quarter 2004 the proportion of disabled persons increased more among females than among males.
