Four in five fulfil gender requirements

78 per cent of public limited companies met the requirements regarding gender balance on company boards at 1 January 2008. This is an increase of 21 percentage points during the last six months.

The requirements regarding gender representation among owner-elected board members vary with the size of the board. If the board consists of two or three owner-elected members, then both genders must be represented. If the board consists of four or five members, then both genders must be represented with at least two persons. If the board consists of six to eight owner-elected members, then both genders must be represented with at least three persons. At least four persons of both genders must be represented if the board consists of nine owner-elected members, and if the board consists of ten or more members, there must be at least 40 per cent representation of either gender.

For employee-elected members both genders must be represented if there is more than one employee-elected member. This does not apply if one gender accounts for less than 20 per cent of the workforce.
