Entrepreneurs are predominantly men

Most entrepreneurs are men, both in limited companies and in personally owned companies. The largest share of women entrepreneurs are found in the personally owned companies. More than half of the limited companies have only one entrepreneur.

18 per cent of the entrepreneurs in 2005 were women, in 2006 this figure was 16 per cent. One third of all entrepreneurs were between 35 and 44 years old. A larger share of the women than the men were younger than 25 years, while a larger share of the men than the women were 45 years or older.

The majority of enterprises have few entrepreneurs. 55 per cent of the enterprises in 2005 had only one entrepreneur, the corresponding figure for 2006 was 57 per cent. Only 1.5 per cent has five or more entrepreneurs.

Statistics Norway has published statistics on owners of personally owned enterprises since 2004. Using the Shareholder Register we have identified the entrepreneur of limited companies. The Shareholder Register contains all shareholders in Norwegian limited companies.

An enterprise can have one or more entrepreneurs. The entrepreneur can be a person, an enterprise or a combination of different types of shareholders. A limited company can have one or several shareholders. The entrepreneur may be the person who had the business idea, a shareholder or the person who runs the enterprise.

The method aims at identifying the shareholders in an enterprise who have a considerable share of the capital stock, or who have the role as either general manager or member of the board. If a new enterprise is owned by other enterprises and the other enterprises are owned solely by private individuals, the entrepreneur is identified among these individuals. If the other enterprises do not only have private individuals as shareholders, the entrepreneur will be among the enterprises that are shareholders in the new enterprise.

In this statistics, the term entrepreneur of limited companies covers both private individuals and enterprises.

In 2005, 14 025 private and public limited companies were set up in Norway, 93.6 per cent of the enterprises are present in the Shareholder Register for 2005. In 2006, 18 082 private and public limited companies were set up in Norway, of which 81.8 per cent are present in the Shareholder Register for 2006.

The entrepreneur in personally owned companies is defined as the owner(s) of the enterprise at the time of set up.

Personally owned companies

30 183 personally owned companies were set up in 2006. They have a total of 33 125 entrepreneurs. Two out of three entrepreneurs were men. The number of entrepreneurs who are not Norwegian citizens was 3.6 per cent, up from 2 per cent in 2005. This increase is mainly due to polish citizens.
