Limited companies owned by men

Three out of four personal shareholders are men. In 85 per cent of the companies with one owner, the owner is a man.

The statistics comprise all public and private limited companies listed in the Shareholder Register of the Directorate of Taxes as of 1 January 2006. Furthermore, the statistics are limited to shareholders identified by personal identification number (personal shareholders) and who owned shares at 31 December 2005. The companies may have other shareholders not identified by personal identification number (mostly other enterprises). A total of 931 376 persons are identified as shareholders in 89 689 limited companies. 198 416 other shareholders are excluded (of which 148 457 are enterprises identified by organisation number). 48 099 limited companies are not included, either because they do not have personal shareholders (42 721 enterprises) or they are missing from the Shareholder Register.

Majority of small shareholdings

Most personal shareholders (64.8 per cent) have shares in public limited companies, while 35.2 per cent have shares in private limited companies. 78 per cent of all personal shareholders own less than 1 per cent of the company. For personal shareholders in public limited companies this figure is 99.9 per cent, and in private limited companies 37.7 per cent. In private limited companies, almost one out of ten (9.3 per cent) own 100 per cent, whereas 3.3 per cent of all personal shareholders are sole owners.

73 per cent of all personal shareholders are men. They tend to have larger shareholdings than women. Men own 84.7 per cent of the limited companies with one owner.

Personally owned enterprises

Non-western immigrants constitute about 6 per cent of the population, and they also represent almost 6 per cent of the owners of sole proprietorships. In comparison, western immigrants own 3.6 per cent of the sole proprietorships, but make up about 2 per cent of the population.

Non-western owners of personally owned enterprises are younger than their Norwegian counterparts. Almost two thirds (63.9 per cent) of the owners who come from non-western countries are between 25 and 44 years of age, whereas less than half (45 per cent) of the Norwegian owners are in this age group.
