Bankruptcies continue to increase

In the second quarter of 2009, the number of bankruptcies was 1 384. This is an increase of 58 per cent compared with the same period last year.

The largest rise was in the counties of Finnmark, Troms, Vestfold and Akershus. Akershus is also the county with the largest rise in absolute figures with 85 bankruptcies more than in the second quarter of 2008. Oppland is the only county where the number of bankruptcies went down (-4 per cent).

Seven out of ten bankruptcies, in total 1 021, were related to enterprises (exclusive sole proprietorships). One in three of these bankruptcies were in wholesale and retail trade, whereas every fifth was in construction.

The remaining 363 bankruptcies applied to sole proprietorships and personal bankruptcies. 38 per cent of them were in construction, followed by transportation and storage with 15 per cent.

Still climb in bankruptcies of Norwegian-registered foreign companies

Norwegian-registered foreign companies accounted for 10.7 per cent of all bankruptcies in the second quarter this year. In the same period last year, the corresponding share was 7.2 per cent. In the second quarter this year, the number of Norwegian-registered foreign companies that went bankrupt rose by 136.5 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Few women go bankrupt

Only 7.6 per cent of the sole proprietors that went bankrupt in 2008, were women, whereas a total of one in four sole proprietorships is run by women.

So far this year, the number of bankruptcies is 2 802. This is a rise of 72 per cent compared with the same period of 2008.
