Slight increase in number of bankruptcies

Like in the fourth quarter of last year, the number of bankruptcies went up in the first three months of 2007. However, there was only an increase of 4.3 per cent compared with the first quarter of last year.

The total number of bankruptcies was 881 in the first quarter of this year. 543 of them were bankruptcies related to enterprises (exclusive sole proprietorships). One of three bankruptcies was within wholesale and retail trade and one of five within real estate, renting and business activities. Within the latter industrial activity, the number of bankruptcies increased by 50 per cent compared with the first quarter of last year.

The remaining 338 bankruptcies are related to sole proprietorships and include personal bankruptcies. The highest growth within this category was construction with a growth of 20 per cent compared with the same period 2006.
