Highest bankruptcy numbers since 1993

The number of bankruptcies has not been higher since 1993: In 2002 Norway had 4 473 bankruptcy proceedings, an increase of 26 per cent from 2001. 18 out of 19 counties had an increase in bankruptcies compared with 2001.

The number of bankruptcies has been around 3 500 from 1994 until 2001. 2002 has the highest number of bankruptcies since 1993, when 5 194 bankruptcies were proceeded, following a longer period of recession and a bank crisis. There were 4 473 bankruptcy proceedings in 2002, which is 911 more bankruptcies than in 2001.

Reduction in 1 out of 19 counties

Only the county of Oppland had fewer bankruptcies in 2002 than in 2001. The reduction was only by 3 per cent. It was worse for Vestfold, Rogaland and Nordland, having an increase of bankruptcies by 67, 59 and 56 per cent respectively. Oslo had most bankruptcies in 2002 with 964 bankruptcies.

More personal bankruptcies

Personal bankruptcies represent 41 per cent of the bankruptcies in 2002. The number of bankruptcies for this group has risen to 1 821, being 30 per cent higher than in 2001. The industry for real estate, renting and business activities had 40 per cent more bankruptcies compared with 2001. The ICT-industry increased the number of bankruptcies from 187 in 2001 to 260 in 2002.
