Large increase in bankruptcies

Bankruptcy proceedings have risen by 21 per cent during the three first quarters of 2002 compared with the corresponding period last year. If this increase continues through the 4t h quarter, the number of bankruptcy proceedings will exceed 4 000 for the first time since 1993.

There were 3 207 bankruptcy proceedings during the first nine moths of 2002, which is 551 more bankruptcies than last year. The increase has been especially high in the county of Rogaland, by 58 per cent more bankruptcies compared with the corresponding period in 2001.

More bankruptcies in the ICT-sector

The ICT-sector experiences a continuing rise in bankruptcy numbers. Last year, at this time of the year, the ICT-sector had 138 bankruptcy proceedings. This year there have been 185 bankruptcy proceedings, an increase of 34 per cent. There were totally 187 bankruptcies in the ICT-sector in 2001.

Personal bankruptcies represent 39 per cent of all bankruptcies during the three first quarters of 2002. The number of bankruptcies for this group has risen by 16 per cent compared with last year. The industry for real estate, renting and business activities had 50 per cent more bankruptcies this year compared with the corresponding period last year.

Fewer in 3 of 19 counties

Only three of 19 counties had fewer bankruptcies compared with the same period last year. Oppland had the largest percentile decline by 23 per cent, while Rogaland had the highest percentile increase by 58 per cent. Oslo had 722 bankruptcies during the three first quarters of 2002, which made Oslo the county with the highest number of bankruptcies.
