Men received 80 percent of dividends

In 2007, individual shareholders were paid dividends and capital reductions totalling almost NOK 26 billion, of which NOK 20 billion went to men and NOK 5 billion to women.

Norwegian limited companies distributed dividends and capital reductions totalling NOK 248 billion. Dividends made up NOK 218 billion, distributed share capital NOK 9 billion and distributed share premium NOK 22 billion of the distributions. The largest share went to Norwegian corporations, which received NOK 121 billion. Foreign shareholders got NOK 69 billion, and the general government collected NOK 30 billion.

Nearly half went to middle-aged men

Individual shareholders resident in Norway received dividends of NOK 15 billion and capital reductions of NOK 11 billion. Men in their forties and fifties got almost half of it, with a total of NOK 12 billion. Women in the same age group had a paltry NOK 2.3 billion. Men owned NOK 65 billion of nominal share capital, while women owned NOK 21 billion.

Swedes owned the most, Danes received the most

Swedes had the biggest share of nominal share capital among foreign shareholders in 2007. They owned NOK 22 billion of nominal share capital in Norwegian limited companies. The Swedes were followed by shareholders from Great Britain and the USA, who owned NOK 14 billion and NOK 10 billion respectively. The largest share of dividends went to Danes, with close to NOK 11 billion, while Americans received NOK 10 billion.

About the statistics basis

The statistics are based on data from the Directorate of Taxes' Register of Shareholders. The statistics include Norwegian limited companies and public limited companies. In total, the statistics cover about 188 000 limited companies in 2007. According to the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises, there were about 206 000 limited companies as of 31 December 2007. For more information, see about the statistics .
