Retail sales up NOK 7.7 billion

Retailers, with the exception of motor vehicles and petrol, increased sales by NOK 7.7 billion the first eight months in 2002 compared with the same period in 2001. This is equivalent to an increase of 5.4 per cent.

Total retail sales in Norway were allmost NOK 149.4 billion the first eight months this year. Retail sale in non-specialized stores, which mainly include grocery stores, rose by 6.3 per cent from the first eight months in 2001 to the first eight months in 2002. Other retail sales of new goods in specialized stores increased by 4.5 per cent the same period. This sector consists of clothing, shoes, electrical goods, furniture and building materials. Stores selling pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles increased sales by 7.1 per cent during this period. The group retail sales not in stores rose by 2.8 per cent.

1.7 billion more in 4th period

In July and August (4th period) 2002, retail sales increased by NOK 1.7 billion or 4.5 per cent. Stores selling pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles increased sales by 8.6 per cent in this period. Retail sale in non-specialized stores, which mainly include grocery stores, rose by 6.9 per cent in July and August 2002 compared with the same period last year. Other retail sales of new goods in specialized stores rose by 3.8 per cent.

Decline in sales of motor vehicles and petrol

Sale of motor vehicles and petrol declined with NOK 4.6 billion in the eight first month 2002 compared with the same period in 2001. This is equivalent to a decrease of 4.6 per cent. Figures in July August (4th period) 2002 indicate a decrease of 6.0 per cent compared with the corresponding period the year before.

Wholesaling decreased by NOK 4.3 billion

Wholesalers decreased sales by NOK 4.3 billion the eight first months 2002 compared with the same period in 2001, a decrease of 1.3 per cent. Wholesaling of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and related products decreased by NOK 6.3 billion the same period, a decrease of 16.2 per cent.
