Spending more on personal well-being

Norwegians spend more and more on personal well-being, and in 2004 the average Norwegianspent almost NOK 1 200 on hairdressing and other beauty treatment. The industry had a total turnover of NOK 5.4 billion, an increase of 7.6 per cent from NOK 5.0 billion in 2003.

As previous years the counties with big cities also top the average spending on hairdressing and other beauty treatment in 2004. On average every Oslo citizen spent almost NOK 1 650 on these services, while the people of Sør-Trøndelag, Rogaland and Hordaland counties also was above the national average with average spending figures on NOK 1 285, NOK 1 266 and NOK 1 204 respectively. At the other end of the scale, the people of Finnmark, Sogn og Fjordane and Nord-Trøndelag counties only spent on average around NOK 970 on hairdressing and other beauty treatment.

The total number of local-kind-of-activity-units (KAUs) in the industry was 6 770 in 2004, up from 6 697 in 2003. In total they employed 14 676 people, an increase of 4.5 per cent from 14 039 in 2002. Compensation of employees was NOK 1.9 billion in 2004, and the gross investments were approximately NOK 100 million.

Physical well-being booming

The 1 093 local KAUs in the physical well-being industry had a turnover of NOK 1.9 billion in 2004, an increase of 12.3 per cent from 2003. Employment in the industry decreased to 4 680 people in 2004, while total compensation of employees was almost NOK 600 million. The gross investments in the industry came close to NOK 130 million.

Other personal services

The washing and dry-cleaning industry counted 359 local KAUs with a total turnover of NOK 1.7 billion in 2004, an increase of 2 per cent from 2003. The industry employed 2 722 people in 2004.

The 327 local KAUs within the funeral and related activities business had a total turnover of NOK 872 million, an increase of 3.2 per cent from NOK 844 million in 2003. The industry employed 926 people in 2004.

Local KAUs and enterprises

The structural statistics are published on both enterprise and local KAU level. The figures on enterprise level may differ from those on local KAU level. This is due to some enterprises being registered in one industry group after main activity, while at the same time consisting of local KAUs in other groups.
