Norwegians spent NOK 4.8 billion on hair and beauty treatments in 2002 - or more than NOK 1 000 per person. This is an increase of 6.4 per cent from the previous year.

The hairdressing and other beauty treatment industry involved 6 688 local kind-of-activity-units (KAUs) in 2002, an increase of 1.6 per cent from 2001. The industry had a workforce of 13 916 people, up 1 per cent from 13 776 in 2001.

Physical well-being

The 1 043 local KAUs in the physical well-being activities industry had a turnover of NOK 1.7 billion in 2002, an increase of 7.3 per cent from 2001. Employment in the industry increased by 1.8 per cent to 5 078 people in the same period.

Washing and dry-cleaning

The 400 local KAUs in the washing and dry-cleaning activities industry had a workforce of 2 920 people in 2002 and a total turnover of NOK 1.6 billion, an increase of 3.5 per cent from 2001.

The 330 local KAUs in the funeral and related activities industry had a total turnover of NOK 817 million and employed 834 people in 2002. The increase in turnover was 9.2 per cent from 2001.

Growth in sewage and refuse disposal, sanitation and similar activities

The 719 local KAUs in sewage and refuse disposal, sanitation and similar activities had a total turnover of NOK 7.6 billion in 2002, an increase of NOK 1.1 billion from 2001. This industry group employed 5 200 people in 2002 against 4 938 people in 2001, an increase of 5.3 per cent.
