Increased retail sales of hardware

The total retail sales in Norway rose by 5.7 per cent in May this year compared with May last year. The grocery stores with retail sales of hardware, paints and glass increased their sales with 14.5 per cent during the same period.

Retail sale in this term is exclusive sales of motor vehicles and petrol.

The value index of retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores rose by 8.5 per cent in May 2002 compared with May 2001. During the same period the retail sales of pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles increased by 5.3 per cent.

The volume index of retail sales rose by 3.3 per cent in May this year compared with May last year. The volume index of retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores increased the most, by 9.6 per cent.

Seasonally adjusted volume index

The seasonally adjusted volume index was up 3.1 per cent in May 2002 compared to May 2001. From April to May this year the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased by 0.3 per cent.

Changes from preliminary results

The final value index of retail sales for May 2002 is 0.3 per cent higher than the preliminary index published the 24t hJune.
