Retail sales up 2.8 per cent

The value index of retail sales rose 2.8 per cent in December 2001 compared with December 2000. The volume index increased 1.5 per cent during the same period. The seasonally adjusted volume index of retail sales decreased 1.2 per cent in December 2001 compared with November.

The index excludes sales of motorized vehicles and petrol.

Preliminary results

These preliminary results are based on a sample of 9 270 responds. Before the publication of the final results of the retail sales index for December 2001, we expect to receive another 950 responds. The final results, to be published February 2002, may therefore be adjusted.
