Retail sales up 4 per cent

The value index of retail sales increased by 4.1 per cent in March 2001 compared with March 2000. The volume index of retail sales increased by 1.0 per cent and the price index rose 2.9 per cent during the same period. Retail sales figures exclude motor vehicles and petrol.

The value index of retail sales in non-specialised stores, which mainly include grocery stores, rose with 5.9 per cent in March this year compared with March 2000. Retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores increased by 5.8 per cent during the same period.

Seasonally adjusted volume index

The seasonally adjusted volume index rose 2.2 per cent from February to March this year. Compared with the average of January to March this year, the seasonally adjusted volume index rose 1.0 per cent.
