Retail sales down 2.3 per cent

The value index of retail sales decreased with 2.3 per cent in February 2001 compared with February 2000.

The volume index of retail sales decreased 5.7 per cent and the price index increased 3.6 per cent in the same period. February 2001 includes one more trading day compared with February 2000. The retail sales figures exclude motor vehicles and petrol.

The Seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 0.9 per cent in February 2001 compared with January 2001.

The final retail sales volume index for February 2001 is unchanged from preliminary figures published March 23.
