Retail sales rose 3.8 per cent

The value index of retail sales rose 3.8 per cent in 2000 compared with 1999. In December 2000 The value index increased 0.2 per cent compared with December 1999.

The index excludes sales of motorised vehicles and petrol.

In 2000 the volume index of retail sales rose 1.8 per cent compared with 1999, but in December 2000 the volume index of retail sales decreased 2.0 per cent compared with December 1999.

The seasonally adjusted volume index of retail sales increased 1.0 per cent in December 2000 compared with November. The seasonally adjusted volume index is 0.6 per cent lower in December than average for the year 2000.
