Export volumes increased

The export volume with the exclusion of ships and oil platforms increased by 1.9 per cent the 1st quarter of 2003 compared with the 1st quarter of 2002. Higher exports of fuels explain this increase, which compensated for the decrease in the other main groups. Import volumes increased as well. The decrease in import prices was less noticeable.

Adjusted for seasonality the export volume figures with the exclusion of ships and oil platforms show lower imports, down 0.5 per cent, compared with the 1st quarter of 20021.

The index of import prices for traditional goods continued its decline, but compared with the last quarter of 2002 it showed an increase of 2.9 per cent. The growth is mainly due to higher prices of fuels such as mineral oil, up 9.1 per cent, and miscellaneous manufactured articles such as electrical machinery, up 8.1 per cent, as well as power generating machinery, up 27.2 per cent.

The price level of exports of goods with the exclusion of ship and oil platforms increased by 4.2 per cent in the 1st quarter of 2003 compared with the 1st quarter last year. As in the previous quarter prices were higher. However, in the 1st quarter the growth was stronger. The rather strong growth in prices of mineral oil and electric current, up 13 per cent, compensated for a downward trend in the other main groups.

Higher imports

The import volume index for traditional goods increased by 7.7 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter of 2002. When it comes to fuels, a seasonal increase of 50.3 per cent was recorded, and this strong growth was mainly due to higher imports of electrical current. Higher imports of furniture, clothing and footwear explain some of this increase as well. Since the second half of 2002 there has been a downward trend in the seasonally adjusted figures. In the 1st quarter of 2003 the trend continued its decline, and import figures decreased by 0.5 per cent compared with the previous quarter.

Compared with the corresponding quarter last year the level of the export volume of traditional goods showed a minor decrease of 0.6 per cent. Seasonally adjusted figures for export volume of traditional goods showed an increase of 0.7 per cent. Compared with the trend in the last half of 2002 this growth is somewhat modest. Tis is a marked change compared with the marked decrease of 6.3 per cent in the 4th quarter of 2002.1

The index of import prices of traditional goods showed a decrease of 5.1 compared with the 1st quarter of 2002. This indicates a continuation of the decline, though a more modest one compared with the decrease of 8.6 per cent in the previous quarter. Nor in the 1st quarter of 2003 did the growth compensate for the downward trend in the other main groups.

The price level of exports of traditional goods decreased by 4.5 per cent compared with the 1st quarter of 2002. Prices of foodstuff showed the strongest decrease, down 12.4 per cent, including fish and fish products. Prices of crude materials fell by 6.2 per cent, while prices of miscellaneous manufactured articles fell by 9.3 per cent.
