Slight increase in import prices

The import price index for traditional goods shows an increase of 0.7 per cent from the second quarter of 2002. Although a modest one, the figures show that for the first time since the first quarter of 2001 an increase occurred, and this is mainly due to higher prices of furniture and clothing.

Import prices of traditional goods are still low, but compared with the second quarter the price index has increased by 0.7 per cent. The prices of furniture and parts thereof have increased by 6.9 per cent, and articles of apparel and clothing accessories by 9.9 per cent.

However, the decrease by 5.1 per cent in the import price index of goods excluding ships and oil platforms compared with the corresponding quarter last year, shows that import prices are still falling. Nevertheless, compared with the decrease of 8.8 per cent in the second quarter this is a modest decrease. Import prices are lower in all groups, but when it comes to mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, the decrease is a considerable one, -13.4 per cent. Prices of mineral oil are lower, -14.9 per cent, and electric current, -6.1 per cent. The decrease is also due to lower prices of crude materials such as crude rubber, -6.3 per cent as well as metalliferrous ores and metal scrap, -20.9 per cent.

Higher import volumes

Adjusted for seasonality there was an increase in the import volume of goods excluding ships and oil platforms of 1.7 per cent from the second quarter of 2002. This increase is related to higher imports of power generating machinery and equipment, office machines and automatic data processing machines, telecommunication apparatus, clothing and footwear.

Compared with the corresponding quarter in 2001 the import volume index shows an increase of 1.1 per cent. The substantial drop in crude materials of 11.7 per cent, such as pulp and waste paper, -14.1 per cent and metalliferrous ores and metal scrap, -22.8 per cent, is counteracted by an increase in imports of manufactured goods. Imports of power generating machinery and equipment, office machines and automatic data processing machines, and road vehicles have increased by 16.8 per cent, 10.5 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively.

Lower export prices of mineral oil and gas

Export prices for goods excluding ships and oil platforms show a considerable decrease of 12 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter last year. This is mainly due to lower prices of fuels like mineral oil, -13.6 per cent, and gas, -9.5 per cent.

The export price index for goods excluding ships and oil platforms has decreased by 3.1 per cent after an increase of 2.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2002. Prices are lower for fish, -2.4 per cent, beverages and tobacco, -2.8 per cent, as well as paper, -5.4 per cent.

Higher export volumes

The figures adjusted for seasonality show higher export volumes, 4.6 per cent. Exports of fish have increased by 4.8 per cent, and beverages and tobacco, 13.9 per cent.

Volume indices for export of traditional goods show a considerable increase of 9.7 per cent from the corresponding quarter last year. This increase is mainly due to higher export of beverages and tobacco, 49.5 per cent, fish, 14.2 per cent as well as power generating machinery and equipment, 30.9 per cent.
