Imports still high

Despite a moderate decrease in the volume indices for imports of traditional goods, 0.8 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2001, the figures adjusted for seasonality still show high imports. The volume of exports has increased as well, although a bit less than in previous quarters.

The volume index for imports of traditional goods shows a decrease of 1.4 per cent from the second quarter of 2000. This is mainly due to a decrease of 19 per in the group fuel products.

The price level of imports of traditional goods decreased by 1.9 per cent compared with the first quarter. This decrease can be related to lower prices of foodstuffs - such as meat and fish. The effects of the lower overall price index are to a certain degree outweighed by an increase in prices of fruit and vegetables of about 7 per cent.

Compared with the corresponding quarter in 2000 the price index for imports of traditional goods has increased by 6.2 per cent. This increase can be related to higher prices of raw materials such as fertilizers and metalliferous ores.

Less growth in the export volume

Exports of traditional goods were 3.4 per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of 2000, with the highest growth in the two previous quarters. This increase is mainly due to higher exports of beverages and tobacco, as well as timber.

Adjusted for seasonality the volume of exports of goods excluding ships and oil platforms decreased by 1.3 per cent compared with the last quarter. Lower exports of foodstuffs such as fish, dairy products as well as minerals and gas explain much of this increase.

The index of export price for goods excluding ships and oil platforms shows an increase of 3.5 per cent after a marked decrease of 11.2 per cent in the first quarter.

Export prices of commodities excluding ships and oil platforms increased by 3.6 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter last year. This is among other things due to higher prices of mineral oils and mineral products (4 per cent) and natural gas (21 per cent), as well as increased prices of beverages and tobacco.
