High Volume of Exports

The volume of the Norwegian exports of goods exluding ships and oil platforms was 8.7 per cent higher in the first quarter of 2000 than in the first quarter of 1999. Also excluding crude oil and natural gas, the index this year was 2.9 per cent higher. Imports were 2.0 per cent lower than in the first quarter of 1999.

Adjusted for seasonality, there was a decrease in the exports of 6 per cent from the fourth quarter of 1999 to the first quarter this year. For traditional goods the decrease was 4 per cent, bearing in mind that the levels of the aggregate export volume indices were exceptionally high in the last quarter of 1999.

The seasonally adjusted index for the volume of imports shows a decrease of 4 per cent from the last quarter of 1999.

The indices for the main commodity group aggregates, show higher exports of fuels and metals exclusive of iron, and lower exports of foodstuffs like dairy products and fish.

The export price index stood at an average of 47 per cent above the level of the index of the first quarter of 1999, the main factor being the higher oil prices. When excluding crude oil and natural gas, the export price index was still 11 per cent higher.

The level of the import prices was 4 per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of 1999.

The figures are exclusive of ships and mobile oil platforms, the same as traditional goods on the import side. For exports, traditional goods are also exclusive of crude oil and natural gas.
