More students in teacher education

In higher education, there were 2 590 more students in the various teacher education programmes in 2016 than the year before, according to new figures from Students in higher education. In 2015, 36 850 students were registered in these programmes, and 39 440 in 2016.  

In the various teacher education programmes at bachelor and master level, there was an increase of 830 students in 2016 compared with 2015. Another increase of 740 students was registered in the teacher training programme – or 24 per cent, and also 1 020 more teachers in the various continuing education programmes.

A government programme to promote the status and quality of teachers by investing in continuing education for teachers may have contributed to an increase from 5 160 in 2015 to 6 175 teachers in continuing education programmes in 2016. The total number of students in the various teacher education programmes increased by 1 000 a year from 2011 to 2013. From 2013 to 2016, there was an annual increase of at least 2 000 students. 

In the academic year 2016/17, the total number of students enrolled in higher education in Norway and Norwegian students studying abroad was 289 000; an increase of 5 900 students from the year before.

The various teacher education programmes include:

Teacher training programme; various bachelor programmes in pre-school/kindergarten teacher education, specific subject/vocational teacher education and in pedagogy; general teacher/primary and lower secondary teacher programme and specific subject/ vocational teacher education; master programmes in teacher training and pedagogy; continuing education programmes for teachers.
