Moderate growth in land transport

The local kind-of-activity units (KAUs) in land transport had a turnover of NOK 48.01 billion in 2004. This is 41 per cent more than the year before. Freight transport by road was the largest industry sub class with a turnover of NOK 28.7 billion.

Turnover, by industry subclass. Local KAUs. 2002-2004

Total operating result for the land transport businesses was NOK 5.3 billion, nearly unchanged from the year before. Productivity measured in terms of value added was NOK 23.5 billon, almost the same as in 2003.

Growth in other land passenger transport

The turnover in other land passenger transport increased by 28 per cent to NOK 1.1 billion. This was partly because of the 69 new local KAUs in the industry sub class, but a lot of the old KAUs also saw a substantial growth.

The consolidation within freight transport by road continued in 2004, the industry sub class had 509 fewer KAUs than the year before, whilst total turnover was up 4 per cent.

Enterprise level

The structural business statistics for land transport are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. On the enterprise level total turnover was NOK 48.01 billion in 2004, while the total number of persons employed was 64 356.

Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate somewhat from figures compiled on the local KAU level. This is due to the fact that enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs within the enterprise.

Employment figures

Starting in 2004 the methods for gathering and estimating employment were changed. Employment figures are now collected directly through the Registrar of Employers and Employees (Arbeidsgiver- og Arbeidstakerregistret, a.k.a. AA-registret). The change makes it difficult to compare employment-figures over time.

For more information about this and other definitions used in the structural business statistics for land transport, see "About the statistics".
