Slight decrease in land transport turnover

Turnover decreased by 2 per cent to NOK 44.1 billion for the local kind-of-activity units in the land transport industry division in 2001. Total turnover in the smallest local KAUs equalled turnover in the largest ones.

The decrease in total turnover of close to NOK one billion was mainly due to the fact that a process of extensive restructurings continued in parts of the land transport industry division in 2001.

However, the figures for operating income suggest a smaller decrease in the level of activity than the turnover figures. Total operating income for the local KAUs in the land transport industry division was close to NOK 48.2 billion in 2001, a decrease of NOK 243 million compared with the previous year.

Total employment in the land transport industry division decreased by 345 persons from 2000 to 2001, while personnel costs where about the same as in 2000.

Growth for taxi operations and tramways

Total turnover for the local KAUs in taxi operation was NOK 5.4 billion in 2001, an increase of 10 per cent compared with the previous year. In the same period, total turnover for the local KAUs in tramway and suburban transport increased by 5 per cent to somewhat above NOK 1 billion, while total turnover for the local KAUs in other land passenger transport (mainly non-scheduled motorbus transport) increased by 5 per cent to NOK 725 million.

Restructurings in freight transport and railway transport

Total turnover for the local KAUs in freight transport by road was NOK 25.9 billion in 2001, a decrease by 5 per cent compared with 2000. In the same period, turnover in transport via railways decreased by 3 per cent to NOK 4.5 billion. In both cases, the decrease in turnover was mainly due to restructurings in the respective businesses.

Total turnover for the local KAUs in scheduled motorbus transport was somewhat above NOK 6.6 billion in 2001, an increase of 1 per cent compared with 2000.

Investments, by industry subclass. Local KAUs. 2000 and 2001

Increased investments

Total investments in the land transport industry division increased by 38 per cent compared with 2000, to somewhat above NOK 4.4 billion. The local KAUs in freight transport by road and scheduled motorbus transport were responsible for most of this increase, but total investments increased in all parts of the land transport industry division in 2001 - except for tramway and suburban transport.

Turnover in small Local KAUs equal to large ones

The land transport industry division is made up of local KAUs of all sizes, and the total activity in the industry division is equally distributed among local KAUs in the different size classes. For instance, the 14 461 local KAUs with less than four persons employed had a total turnover of NOK 13.4 billion in 2001, about the same as the 127 local KAUs with more than 50 persons employed.

High level of activity in Oslo and Akershus

Figures on the county level show that the local KAUs in the land transport industry division in Oslo, Akershus and Hordaland had the largest turnover in 2001, while the local KAUs in Finnmark, Vest-Agder and Sogn og Fjordane had the lowest.

Compared with 2000, turnover increased the most in Telemark, Troms and Oppland, and decreased the most in Akershus, Vestfold and Romsdal.

Statistics on the enterprise level

The structural business statistics for land transport are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. On the enterprise level turnover decreased by 2 per cent to NOK 44.2 billion for the land transport industry division as a whole, while employment decreased by 194 persons compared with 2000.

Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate somewhat from figures compiled on the local KAU level. This is due to the fact that enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs within the enterprise. For more information about these and other definitions used in the structural business statistics for land transport, se "About the statistics".
