Less turnover in sea and coastal water transport

In 2002 sea and coastal water transport had a turnover of NOK 96.8 billion and employed 23 692. The operating income decreased by 11.3 per cent, reducing the division's profitability. Ocean transport is accountable for 91 per cent of the division's turnover and 61 per cent of total employment.

Sea and coastal water transport consist of six subclasses; ocean transport, domestic maritime transport (unscheduled transport in Norwegian coastal waters), scheduled long distance inland transport in coastal waters, tugs and supply vessels in Norwegian coastal waters, other coastal water transport in Norway and inland water transport. Inland ferry transport in public road connections is included in scheduled long distance inland transport in coastal waters.

Decrease in turnover

Sea and coastal water transport decreased the turnover by 11.3 per cent in 2002 compared with 2001. Ocean transport had a turnover of NOK 88.2 billion, a decrease of 12.7 per cent compared with 2001. The division excluding ocean transport had a turnover of NOK 8.6 billion, an increase of 7 per cent.

Employment

Sea and coastal water transport employed 23 692 in 2002, the same as in 2001. Scheduled long distance inland transport in coastal waters employed 5 908, an increase of 7.2 per cent, while employment in tugs and supply vessels in Norway decreased by 8.4 per cent to 1 249 persons.

Profitability down

The operating profit for sea and coastal water transport decreased by NOK 13.1 billion compared with 2001. Ocean transport decreased by NOK 13.3 billion, mainly due to less freight income. Scheduled long distance inland transport in coastal waters increased the operating profit by NOK 237 billion to NOK 474 billion compared with 2001.

Counties

The counties Oslo, Rogaland and Hordaland generated together 68 per cent of the turnover and 59 per cent of the total value added for sea and coastal water transport, which is a decrease compared with the figures in 2001.

Statistics on the enterprise level

The structural business statistics for sea and coastal water transport are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. On the enterprise level the turnover was NOK 97 billion and the division employed 23 697 persons.

Local KAUs and enterprises

1 730 Local KAUs and 1 713 enterprises were operating within sea and coastal water transport in 2002. Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate somewhat from figures compiled on the local KAU level. This is due to the fact that the enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs.

Employment figures in ocean transport for 2001are revised.
