109 billion NOK turnover at sea

Water transport had a turnover of NOK 109 billion and employed 25 865 in 2001. The subclass ocean transport employed 16 989 persons, and the turnover amounted to NOK 101 billion. Ocean transport is included in the statistic for the first time in 2001.

Domestic water transport: Turnover of NOK 8 billion

The subclasses within domestic water transport employed 8 876 persons and had a turnover of NOK 8.0 billion. Tugs and supply vessels in Norwegian coastal waters are the largest subclass within domestic transport, measured by turnover.

Value added at factor cost: 86 per cent from ocean transport

Ocean transport created the major part of total value added at factor cost in the industry division , NOK 30.5billion. This is equal to 86 per cent of the total. In domestic water transport, inland ferry transport created the largest value added within domestic water transport, NOK 1.9 billion. This is an increase of 35 persent compared with 2000.

Gross investments: NOK 16.5 billion

The gross investments within ocean transport were 13.9 billion NOK. Local KAUs (kind-of-activity units) within domestic water transport made investments for NOK 2.6 billion.

Personnel costs: NOK 11.6 billion

The total of personnel costs in water transport were NOK 11.6 billion. Personnel costs for local KAUs within ocean transport amounted to NOK 8.6 billion. Personnel costs within domestic water transport increased by 3.3 per cent and amounted to NOK 3.1 billion.

Highest value added in Oslo

The counties Oslo, Hordaland and Rogaland generated 70 per cent of total turnover in Norway and 67 per cent of total value added.

Restructuring in the industry division

Users should also know that the revision of industry codes in the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises have led to changes for some of the industries. Subsequently, the figures for 2001 are not fully comparable to previously published figures for 2000.

Statistics on the enterprise level

The structural business statistics for water transport are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. On the enterprise level the turnover was NOK 109 billion, employing 25 967 persons.

Local KAUs and enterprises

1705 Local KAUs and 1 677 enterprises were operating within water transport in 2001. Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate somewhat from figures compiled on the local KAU level. This is due to the fact that the enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs.
