More effective travel agency activities

In 2006, travel agencies had a total turnover of more than NOK 21 billion, which is an increase of 4.3 per cent from 2005. In the same period the number of employees decreased by 2.6 per cent.

The number of employed persons in the travel agency industry in 2006 was 3 511, and the wage cost amounted to more than NOK 1.2 billion. The total value added in the industry grew with almost 10 per cent from 2005.

More companies in experience tourism

The number of companies within travel agency-, travel office and tour operator activities was 1645 in 2006, which is an increase of almost 9 per cent from 2005. While the number of travel agencies and tourist offices remained stable the last year, there has been an increase in the industry groups “Tour guides and leaders”, “Adventure, event and activities operators” and “Tourist related activities n.e.c.”. This tendency reinforces the growth of companies within experience tourism noted in 2005.

Increased profitability

In the industry as a whole, the operating margin increased from 1.2 per cent in 2004 to 2.0 per cent in 2006. This is mainly due to the increase in the operating margin for the biggest subgroup, namely travel agencies. In this group, the operating margin increased from 0.8 per cent in 2004 to 1.5 per cent in 2006. The reason why the operating margin is low for travel agencies is due to the use of gross income.

Industry structure

4 out of 5 companies employed fewer than 5 persons in 2006. These companies accounted for NOK 542 million in value added and 1 512 employees. Only 43 of the companies employed more than 20 persons, yet these accounted for around 40 per cent of the value added and 34 per cent of the number of employees in this industry.

Local KAUs and enterprises

Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate from figures on the local KAU level. This is due to the fact that the enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs.

Revision of industries

In 2007, the enterprises in Statistic Norway’s Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises have been coded in accordance with the new Standard Industrial Classification (SN2007). This has revealed some incorrectly classified enterprises and local KAUs. In such cases, the code according to the current standard (SN2002) has been revised. The impact on activities of travel agencies, tourist offices and tour operators has been minor.
