Decline in turnover
Travel agencies, tourist offices and tour operators had a gross turnover of NOK 29.5 billion in 2002 - a decline just above NOK 600 million from 2001.
For the industry group in total there has been a growth by more than 9 per cent in the number of local kind-of-activity units (KAUs). Nevertheless the gross turnover declined by approximately 2 per cent from 2001 to 2002. Gross turnover means the total amount the local KAUs have charged their customers and not only the provision earned. There has also been a decline in the number of employed people the last year. There has been a similar development on enterprise level.
The travel agencies are still the largest subclass measured by number of local KAUs, number of employed people as well as by gross turnover. Travel agencies constituted about 76 per cent of the total gross turnover.
Decline in value added
As a result of a decline in the gross turnover in the industry group the value added at factor cost has also declined last year. The value added at factor cost has dropped by NOK 45 million to just below NOK 2.2 billion, which equals a decline of about 2 per cent.
Increase in number of enterprises
There has been a comparatively strong increase in number of enterprises last year. It is to a large extent due to better register information as a result of value added tax (VAT) reform and enterprises with low turnover - that were previously not included - are included in 2002.
Local KAUs and enterprises
The figures on the enterprises level may differ from those on local KAU level. This is due to some enterprises being registered after main activity in one industry subclass, but may also consist of local KAUs in other subgroups.
Comparison with previous years
A comparison with previous years of the subclasses is complicated by a relative extensive revision of the industry classification in the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises. Subsequently, the changes do not necessarily reflect real changes. Especially do these changes affect the subclass 63.302 Tourist offices and 63.303 Tour operators. A few local KAUs that were previously a part of subclass 63.302 have now been moved to the new subclass 63.309 Tourist related activities n.e.c. In addition a few local KAUs that previously were a part of subclass 63.303 have been moved to the two new subclasses 63.304 Tour guides and leaders and 63.305 Adventure, event and activities operators.
For the entire industry group this is not a problem as most changes have been within the group.
