Number of travel agencies down

The number of travel agencies went down by more than 3 per cent from 2000 to 2001. The gross turnover however continued to rise.

Turnover in the industry group. Local KAUs. 1999-2001. Million NOK

In 2001 there were 562 local kind-of-activity units (KAUs) in the industry subclass 63.301 Travel agencies. This is a fall by 18 local KAUs compared with the previous year. On the other hand, the gross turnover and the employment went up by nearly 16 and 2 per cent respectively in the same period. In total, above 4 000 people on average worked in the travel agencies and they had a gross turnover of more than NOK 22 billions in 2001. Gross turnover means the total amount the local KAUs have charged their customers.

On enterprise level however, the decrease constituted merely two enterprises; a change from 391 to 389. The growth in the gross turnover and the employment from 2000 was in relative terms equivalent to the local KAUs'.

Fewer smaller local KAUs

The number of local KAUs went down by all numbers of people employed (grouped) from 2000 to 2001. The decrease was highest in the smallest groups, but the industry group continued to be dominated by the small ones in terms of the number of local KAUs compared with the previous year. Three out of four local KAUs had four or less employees in 2001. In all other areas the larger local KAUs dominated. Four out of five people worked in local KAUs with five or more employees and their turnover constituted nearly 84 per cent of the total turnover in the industry group.

Comparison with previous years

A comparison with previous years of the subgroups is complicated by a relative extensive revision of the industry classification in the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises. Subsequently, the changes do not necessarily reflect real changes. For the entire industry group this is not a problem as most changes have been within the group.

Local KAUs and enterprises

The figures on the enterprise level may differ from those on local KAU level. This is due to some enterprises being registered in one industry subclass after main activity, but also consisting of local KAUs in other subgroups.
