Norwegian lorries drive longer

According to calculations made by Statistics Norway, Norwegian lorries covered almost 1.8 billion kilometres during 2005. Of this, 1.6 billion kilometres were domestic transports. This is 21.2 million kilometres more than the year before. The international transports with Norwegian lorries on the other hand, have declined.

During 2005, a total of 240.7 million tons of goods were transported within this country by Norwegian lorries. This is 300 000 tons more than the year before. The increase both in tonnage carried and distance covered give an improvement in transport performance from 14.5 billion tonne-kilometres in 2004 to 15.3 billion tonne-kilometres in 2005.

Kilometres covered by Norwegian lorries in Norway and abroad

64 kilometres per ton

The goods carried by Norwegian lorries in Norway were in average transported 63.8 kilometres per ton. This is 3.7 kilometres more than the year before and 16.8 kilometres more than ten years ago.

Less empty kilometres

One quarter of the distance covered in the domestic transports was run without the lorry being loaded. In 2005 the rate of empty kilometres was 25.8. Compared with 2004 this is one percentage point down. This is in spite of the fact that the transport performance connected to carriage of gravel, sand, cement etc has increased. Such transports do naturally have a rate of empty kilometres of 50.

Goods transported, by commodity. 2005. Per cent

Out of the 240.7 million tonnes transported within Norway, as much as 51 per cent was gravel, sand, cement etc. Yet, the tonnage carried in 2005 was 5.2 million tonnes less than in 2004. The increased transport performance for such goods is due to longer transport distance.

International transports down

In connection with transports abroad, Norwegian lorries drove 176.1 million kilometres, 13.5 million kilometres less than the year before. 4 million tonnes of goods were carried and the transport performance came to 2.9 billion tonnes-kilometres - against 3.0 in 2004. The average transport distance was 723 kilometres per ton.

The same tendency in the 4t h quarter

When comparing the results for the 4t h quarter of 2005 with the corresponding quarter the year before, the trend is more or less the same; increase in national transports and decrease in international transports. There is an exception for tonnage carried on international transports which shows a minor increase.

A total of 67 million tonnes were transported by Norwegian lorries in Norway and abroad in the 4t h quarter of 2005, against 61.9 million tonnes in the corresponding period in 2004. The transport performance came to 4.9 billion tonne-kilometres in the 4t h qarter of 2005, 127 million tonne-kilometres more than in the 4t h quarter 2004.
