Largest increase in cost for cargo ships, smallest for tugs

The sub-indices for all types of vessels increased in the 4th quarter of 2016 compared to the previous quarter. Other cargo ships experienced the relatively largest rise among the different types of vessels, increasing by 2.4 per cent from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Among the sub-indices for all types of vessels, the sub-index for tugs experienced the smallest cost increase. The sub-index for tugs ended at 115.8 in the 4th quarter of 2016 (2009Q2=100), which is a rise of 1.4 per cent compared to the previous quarter and a year-on-year increase of 4.4 per cent.

The total cost index for operators of vessels in domestic sea transport ended at 117.8 in the 4th quarter of 2016. This is an increase of 1.9 per cent compared to the 3rd quarter of 2016 and a rise of 5.4 per cent year-on-year.

From the 3rd quarter of 2016, the sub-index of fuel costs rose 9.8 per cent and ended at 124.2 in the 4th quarter of 2016. This represents an increase of 22.7 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2015. Fuel cost is the second most important cost group within vessel type in domestic sea transport, except cruise ships.

The sub-index for finance costs ended at 62.7 in the 4th quarter of 2016, which is a year-on-year fall of 3.5 per cent and an increase of 4.2 per cent compared to the previous quarter.
