Decrease in fuel costs

Fuel costs decreased by 7 per cent from the 2nd quarter of 2012 to the 2nd quarter of 2013. The total cost index for domestic sea transport in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was 0.2 per cent lower than a year ago.

The sub-index for fuel costs was at 148.4 in the 2nd quarter of 2013. This is 7 per cent lower than the same quarter in 2012 and 4.9 per cent lower than the 1st quarter of 2013. In the capital costs group, financing had the largest relative decline from the previous quarter, with a 6.9 per cent drop. This sub-index is based on the 3-month nominal NIBOR from Norges Bank (Norwegian money market rate). The average for the three-month nominal NIBOR was 2.32 and 1.73 per cent in the 2nd quarters of 2012 and 2013 respectively.

The total cost index for domestic sea transport was at 114.0 in the 2nd quarter of 2013, just 0.2 per cent lower than the same period in 2012, and an increase of 0.5 per cent compared to the 1st quarter of 2013.
