Slight decrease in financing costs

The sub-index for capital costs of financing in domestic sea transport decreased by 8.0 per cent from the 2nd quarter of 2012 to the 2nd quarter of 2011. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2012, the decrease was 7.4 per cent.

The sub-index for capital costs of financing is based on 3-month nominal NIBOR from Norges Bank. This sub-index was 101.6 in the 2nd quarter of 2012. The sub-index for capital depreciation was 102.1 in the same period; a slight increase of 0.4 per cent from the previous quarter and 1.8 per cent higher than the same period in 2011.

Increase in the total index

The total cost index for domestic sea transport was 114.2 in the 2nd quarter of 2012. This is a decrease of only 0.4 per cent from the previous quarter and an increase of 2.6 per cent from the same period in 2011. The sub-index for fuel costs increased by 3.6 per cent compared to the 2nd quarter 2011, while repair and maintenance costs and administrative costs increased by 2.5 and 6.2 respectively during the same period. Crew costs also increased by 3.8 per cent with respect to the 2nd quarter of 2011.

Largest cost increase continues to be for other cargo ships

The sub-index for other cargo ship costs was 116.0 in the 2nd quarter of 2012. This represents an increase of 3.1 per cent compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011. The sub-index for total costs for tow vessels was 111.2 in the 2nd quarter of 2012. This figure represents an increase of only 0.1 per cent compared to the same period last year. The base year for the index is 2009.
