51 million airport passengers

Passengers at Norwegian airports totalled 51.6 million in 2012. This is 2.8 million, or 5.8 per cent, more than in 2011.

Airport passengers is the sum of passengers on board at arrival and passengers on board at departure. It includes passengers in direct and indirect transit. There were 6.9 million1 passengers in indirect transit in 2012, which is 15.9 per cent higher than that of 2011. The number of passengers in direct transit increased by 4.2 per cent in the same period, and ended at 8 444 0001 for 2012 as a whole.

Largest growth in international traffic

In the fourth quarter of 2012 there were 4.5 million passengers on board flights between Norway and other countries. This is 8.1 per cent higher than in the fourth quarter of 2011. Flights arriving in Norway had about the same number of passengers as flights leaving, with a 2.27 million head count. The annual change in the number of passengers on domestic flights was 2 per cent in the same period.

The distribution of passengers between domestic and international flights is the same when viewing annual figures. In 2011, there were 15.2 million passengers on international flights. In 2012, this figure had grown by 4.3 per cent, ending at 15.9 million passengers. Corresponding figures for international flights were 18.3 and 19.8 million passengers and a growth rate of 8.3 per cent.

Fewer available seats

While the number of passengers went up by 8.3 per cent from 2011 to 2012, the number of flights saw an increase of only 3.9 per cent. The corresponding number of seats went from 28.2 million in 2011 to 30.2 million in 2012; an increase of 7 per cent.
