Half a million more passengers

Flights departing from airports in Norway had 534 000 more passengers in the first quarter of 2012 than the same period last year. The increase in passengers at the top five airports was almost 12 per cent.

A total of 11.6 million passengers travelled at Norwegian airports in the first quarter of 2012; an increase of 10 per cent compared to the same quarter of 2011.

Good start this year

Most of the airports had an increase in passenger numbers, both in domestic and internationals flights. Oslo Gardermoen had an 8 per cent increase in relation to passengers on domestic flights, and the corresponding figure for internationals fights was 11 per cent. Stavanger Sola airport had corresponding increases of 6 and 18 per cent respectively. Bergen Flesland had a growth of 11 and 8 per cent, and the growth at Trondheim Værnes was 8 and 22 per cent.

Fewer international passengers at private airports

Moss Rygge and Sandefjord Torp were the 4th and 5th biggest airports in this quarter measured in numbers of international passengers. Moss Rygge had 4 100 fewer international passengers in the first quarter of 2012; a 1.5 per cent decrease compared to the first quarter of 2011. Sandefjord Torp had 3 500 fewer passengers on international flights; a 1.8 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year.

Growth in goods transport

A total of 22 000 tonnes of goods were transported at Norwegian airports in the first quarter of 2012; an increase of almost 30 per cent compared to the same quarter of 2011. A total of 18 700 tonnes were transported to and from Norway; a 38 per cent increase compared to the same quarter of 2011. Ninety-one per cent of all goods transported are handled by Oslo Gardermoen.

Growth in capacity

There were 187 000 aircraft movements registered at Norwegian airports in the first quarter of 2012; a 6.1 per cent increase compared to the first quarter of last year. The corresponding number of seats increased by 7.3 per cent in the same period.

Almost full capacity between Bergen and Tromsø

Available capacity between Bergen and Tromsø was 19 per cent, but as much as 66 per cent between Trondheim and Tromsø. Another city pair with high available capacity was Stavanger - Trondheim, with 56 per cent. For all flights to and from Norwegian airports, the available capacity was 41 per cent.
