Go West!

Norway is our most popular holiday destination. Out of all holiday trips last summer, 55 per cent were taken in Norway. Western Norway was the main destination. Denmark, Sweden, Greece and Spain are the most popular summer holiday destinations abroad.

The number of domestic holiday trips during the summer of 2001 was 1.6 million. This constituted 55 per cent of all holiday trips in the period and close to 60 per cent of all domestic holiday trips in the holiday year. In the rest of the holiday year 2001 the portion of domestic holiday trips was 51 per cent. In other words Norway was the favorite holiday destination during the summer in both absolute and relative terms.

In Norway it was the western part, i.e. Rogaland, Hordaland, Sogn and Fjordane and Møre and Romsdal, that attracted most. 345 000 holiday trips were made in this region during the summer of 2001.

Among the holiday destinations abroad the neighboring countries Denmark and Sweden and the southern countries Greece and Spain were the most visited ones in the period. These four countries have varied in popularity over the years. Anyhow, they have in the last summers been significantly more popular than other countries.

Nearly 6 out of 10 holiday trips were taken during the summer. The share of Norwegians in the age group 16-79 on holiday trip during the summer of 2001 was 63 per cent. This has barely changed in the previous ten years.

More than 2.1 million Norwegians went on holiday in the summer of 2001 (i.e. from May to September inclusive). For more than the half, i.e. 1.1 million Norwegians, this was the only holiday trip in the holiday year 2001 (from November 2000 to October 2001 inclusive). During the summer of 2001 the number of holiday trips per person was 0.9 trips on average and among the holidaymakers the average was 1.4 trips.

During the summer of 2001 Norwegians made 2.9 million holiday trips with a minimum of 4 overnight stays. In total these holiday trips lasted 30.3 million nights. On average this makes 10.4 overnight stays per trip.

Accommodation in hotels was most common during the summer as in the rest of the year 2001. The portion of holiday trips in hotels was 32 per cent during the summer of 2001. This is 8 percentage points less than in the rest of the year. The portion of holiday trips with tourist campsites as the main type of accommodation was on the other hand 9 per cent in the summer season and just 1 per cent in the rest of the year.

Another special feature of the holiday trips during the summer of 2001 was the use of private and rented vehicles, e.g. cars and motorbikes. Nearly 6 out of 10 holiday trips had private and rented vehicles as the main mode of transport, compared with barely 4 out of 10 during the rest of the year. For the use of plane it was the other way round. Less than 3 out of 10 holiday trips had planes as the main mode of transport in the period compared with close to half of the holiday trips in the rest of the year.
