Fewer and shorter holiday trips

Norwegians made fewer and shorter holiday trips in year 2000 compared with the previous year.

Percentage of people on holiday. 1970-2000

Number of holiday trips per person. 2000. Per cent

75 per cent of the Norwegian population in the age group 16-79 went on one or more holiday trips in the holiday year 2000 (i.e. from November 1999 to October 2000). This constitutes more than 2.5 million people. Compared with 1999 this is a slight decrease of 1 percentage point. However, compared with the share of holidaymakers in the rest of the 1990s the figures for year 2000 are higher.

Like in previous years the share of the population with no holiday trips is significantly lower in Akershus and Oslo than in the rest of the country. Compared with 1999 this share has been reduced even further, as well as the share with three or more holiday trips grew. In the rest of Norway - on the other - hand less people went on one or more holiday trips compared with the year before, whereas the share with none or one holiday trip increased by 1 percentage point each.

Greatest decline in domestic holiday trips

The about 2.5 million people who went on holiday trips in 2000 made more than 5.1 million holiday trips altogether. On average the number of holiday trips per person was 1.5 trips and among the holidaymakers 2.0 trips.

Compared with 1999 the decrease in the number of holiday trips was barely 4 per cent. The consequences have been most noticeable for Norway as a holiday destination. Here the fall was almost 11 percent. Norway is still the favourite holiday destination for Norwegians, but the share of outbound holiday trips keeps on growing.

2.7 million holiday trips had Norway as their main destination. Slightly 600 000 holiday trips went to the other Nordic countries and 1.5 million holiday trips to countries in the rest of Europe. The number of holiday trips outside Europe was close to 300 000.

The shortest holiday trips dominate

In total the holidaymakers had about 51 million overnight stays during their holiday trips. On average the number of nights per person was 15.1 whereas the average among the holidaymakers was 20.0 nights. A holiday trip lasted on average 10 nights.

Also for the overnight stays the share abroad increased. A domestic holiday lasted on average 8.9 nights and an outbound holiday 11.2 nights in 2000. The figures for 1999 where 9.3 and 10.8. ,respectively

Money is looser

Overall the holiday year 2000 had a slight decline in the number of holidaymakers, the number of holiday trips and the duration of the holiday trips. Despite of this the holiday expenditure showed a growth of 9 per cent to more than NOK 34 billion.

On the other hand the overall expenditure on holiday trips in Norway went down, but only with barely 2 per cent. This is approximately 8 percentage points less than the decrease in the number of domestic holiday trips. In other words the holidaymakers who went on holiday in Norway spent more per trip in 2000 than in 1999.

Easter holiday less common

At the end of the 1990s the interest in making holiday at Easter grew, but fell again in 2000. The share of the population on Easter holiday was 12 per cent in 2000, a decrease by 3 percentage points compared with 1999.

The decline can be seen in connection with the fact that the Easter 2000 took place at the end of April. Instead the share of people on winter holiday grew by 7 percentage points compared with the previous year. The 19 per cent share of people on winter holiday is the highest recorded in the holiday survey ever.
