Average age down for stock of vehicles

The average age for the stock of vehicles has declined for the first time since 1998. At the end of 2004 the average age for private cars was 10.2 years compared with 10.3 years in 2003. The average age for vans was 7.3 years at the end of 2004. There were 2 260 975 private cars and vans registered in Norway at the end of 2004.

There were 1 976 946 private cars and 284 029 vans registered in Norway at the end of 2004. This was an increase of 2.3 and 5.9 per cent respectively from the previous year.

Increasing proportion of private cars above 20 years old

At the end of 2004 7.2 per cent of the private cars in Norway were over 20 years old. This proportion has risen by 2.1 percentage points in the last six years.

Oldest private cars in Oppland

Apart from Svalbard, Oppland is the county with the highest average age for private cars in Norway. Private cars in this county were 12 years old on average. Cars in Oslo have the lowest average age - 8.7 years.

Vans in Oppland were the oldest with an average age of 9.7 years - 4.8 years more than the average age for vans in Oslo.

Two Norwegians per car

491 private cars or vans were registered per 1 000 population in Norway at the end of 2004. Akershus had the highest number of cars per 1 000 population by 565. Hedmark followed by 555 cars per 1 000 population. Finnmark had the lowest number of cars per 1 000 population by 428.

Volkswagen most common private car...

249 191 private cars made by Volkswagen were registered at the end of 2004. This accounted for 12.6 per cent of the stock of private cars. Toyota was the most common make in the age group under four years old - 46 125 private cars at the end of 2004. Volvo dominated the age group above 20 years of age - 21 953 private cars.

... and Toyota most common van

Toyota was the most common van with a proportion of 18,7 per cent of the total stock. At the end of 2004 53 085 vans of this make were registered in Norway.
