More cars despite increase in scrapped cars

In 2010, almost 99 000 cars were scrapped for refund. This is 4 000 more than in 2009. Nevertheless, there were 72 000 more cars with Norwegian number plates at the end of the year.

Average age of registered private cars and vans. 1993-2010

A total of 2.7 million cars were registered in Norway at the end of 2010. Of this, 2.3 million were private cars and nearly 400 000 were vans. The stock of private cars has grown by 2.8 per cent in one year, while the stock of vans has grown by 2.5 per cent.

Older cars

The average age has had a steady increase the last three years for both private cars and vans. At the end of 2007, Norwegian private cars were 10.2 years old on average, while at the end of 2010 they were 10.5 years old. For vans the age has increased from 6.8 years in 2007 to 7.5 years in 2010.

Most Volkswagen

For many years Volkswagen has had most private cars in Norway, with Toyota in second place. And for many years, the situation has been the opposite for vans, where Toyota has been on top and Volkswagen second. In 2010, Volkswagen surpassed Toyota vans and is subsequently the largest provider of both car types.

More cars scrapped

Of the scarcely 99 000 cars scrapped for refund in 2010, 91 000 were private cars and 8 000 were vans. The average age at the time of scrapping was 18.4 years for private cars and 14.9 years for vans.

Of the private cars scrapped in 2010, most were of the make Ford, with Volkswagen and Opel in second and third place. These cars constituted 7.3 per cent, 3.3 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively, of the total number of registered cars of the same make.

Of the vans, most Volkswagens were scrapped. Ford was right behind with only 6 fewer cars scrapped. Opel was in third place. The scrapped cars’ share of the total number of registered cars of the same make was 1.7 per cent for Volkswagen, 4.5 per cent for Ford and 2.7 per cent for Opel.

Scrapping

In evaluating the material of cars scrapped for refund, the make’s market share over time should be taken into consideration. It must also be emphasised that the average age of scrapped vehicles of different makes cannot necessarily be used as an estimate of the age of the corresponding vehicles manufactured today.
